Front end Editing

One of the things that makes Joomla so powerful is the ability to edit content from the front end.  To do this we need to be able to log to the front end as an administrator.  This is different from the logging in to the backend. In Joomla sites different Users are typically granted various front end access privileges (eg to post content). As you are the administrator of the site you have maximum frontend editing privileges.

While we are building the site it is a good idea to first take the site offline. This will mean that when we attempt to browse to our site we will be presented with a login screen, enabling us to view and edit the site once we enter our username and password. When our site is ready to go live we will need to create a way to login through a menu item or placing the login module on the front page. But first lets take our site offline so we can work with it.

Log in to the back end and go to Site/Global Configuration. Ensure the site tab is active and click  yes against Site Offline in the site settings. Click save.

Now when you browse to your site you will see the Site Offline message and the login module. Once you log in you should now see the edit icon typographyedit at the top of the main content area of your page. Clicking on this icon will reveal the default editing pane. Unfortunately this default editor has very limited features. Fortunately much more powerful editors are available as extensions.

 1. Installing the JCE Editor

Log in to the back end of your site and go to extension manager. We install the JCE editor in the same way we installed the template.

You can download the zip to your hard drive from here

or copy and past the following url into install from url field after the http://

2. Make JCE the default editor

Go to Site/Global  Configuration

Under the Site tab you should see a Default Editor drop down list. Change it from Tiny MCE to JCE. Now when you open a page and edit it you will see the JCE editor

The JCE editor has a number of more advanced features including image uploading and resizing, link management and text editing.

3. Uploading and inserting images

Click on the edit icon on your front page to open the editor. Click on the image icon jceImage  in the menu bar of the JCE editor.

Click on the upload image icon imManup2 in the file browser of the of the image manager. You can drag and drop the image from desktop file explorer or browse for it. Once you have selected your image click on upload. You then need to click on the image in the middle pane of the file browser to make its url appear in the top pane.  Click Insert to insert your image. You may want to re-edit its size, alignment or other features. Simply click on it in the JCE editor and click the image icon in the toolbar. Once you have made your changes press update.
