User Registration

By default visitors to your site are allowed to register. If a registration form is made available (either as a module or a menu item) then visitors can register by selecting a user name, password and entering their email address. By default Joomla then sends a confirmation email that the user then needs to reply to before the account is made active.

Changing the Default User Mangament Settings

Go to Users -  User Manager and click on the Options icon in the top right.

To change the the Activation behaviour use the New User Account Activation drop down list. You have three options, Self (the user gets sent a confirmation email), Admin, (an administrator needs to activate the account) or None (the user is automatically registered on submitting the form).

You can choose to send an email to the Administrator(s) each time someone registers. You may also want to include a 'Captcha' challenge, particularly if you are getting a large number of unexplained registrations with randomly generated email addresses.

Restricting access to resources

Resources such as articles, modules, menu items and menus can be set as Access Registered. This means that access to the item will not be given unless the user has registered and is logged in.

This is done simply by selecting the option Access to Registered when the resource is created or edited.

accReg

Things to try.

Create a category (eg clients) that will only be available to registered users.

Create a Category Blog only available to registered users.

Create module only available to registered users.

Adding Video

For this tutorial we are going to use the Videobox plugin. This plugin alows you to display a video clip, either hosted on Vimeo or YouTube, in your pages. You will need to download the zip file from HERE.   Go to Extensions - Extension Manager and use the Upload Package File to upload and install the extension.

vidboxsuc

You now need to enable the extension. Go to Extensions - Plug in Manager. In the filter box filter for Select Status choose Disabled. Now in the list of pluggins click on the red X next to Videobox  to enable it.

vidboxsel

The page should reload and Videbox should disappear from the list.

To insert a video either hosted on Vimeo or YouTube you will need the Vimeo URL or the YouTube ID. The ID is the last set of letters and numbers after the v= in the YouTubes URL

Now create a new article or open an existing one for editing.

On a line by itself type:

{videobox}xxxx{/videobox}

Where xxxx is the URL or ID of the video. Save and close the article and check to see that the clip plays. For other options see the plugins documentation at http://hitko.eu/software/videobox/documentation

Add an Image Gallery

For this tutorial we are going to install the Sigplus Image Gallery. This extension requires your server to have GD, an image manipulation library, installed. To ensure your server has GD support go to the Joomla administrator then to System-System Information  and click on the PHP Information tab. This displays your PHP configuration information. Scroll down the GD section. GD Support should be set to Enabled. Also gif read support, jpeg support, png support should all be set to enabled.

gdsupport

If your server does not support GD you may have to try another image gallery extension. Also you may want advanced features not included in Sigplus but may be in a commercial (for a price) extension. For a full list see :http://extensions.joomla.org/extensions/photos-a-images/galleries/photo-gallery

Install the Sigplus extension in the same way you installed the JCE and Gantry extensions.(Extensions - Extension Manager) You can use the following URL to Install from URL:

http://joomlacode.org/gf/download/frsrelease/18984/133770/pkg_sigplus-1.4.2.17.zip

If you are unable to install using this method the extensions download page is available HERE

The full documentation for Sigplus is available HERE

Now we need to enable this extension. Go to Extensions - Plugin Manager. In the left hand filter pane choose to filter by Type and choose Content. Click on the red cross next to Content- image gallery - sigplus

enablesig

Now we need to add a folder of images to be included in the image gallery.

Go to Content - Media Manager. Click Create Folder. Give the folder a name then next to this text field click Create Folder.

mmcreateFold2

Click on your folders icon in the Media Manager to open it. It should be empty. Click Upload in the top left. (make sure the media manager is in your empty folder). Then click Choose Files. This will open the file browser. Choose the images you want to include in your gallery, click Open in the file browser, then in the Media Manager click Start Upload. The image gallery accepts .png , .gif , and  .jpeg file types.

mmupload

Now we need to place the image gallery in an article. Create a new article or open an exsting one. On a line of its own with no formatting, type the following, replacing 'myfolder' with the name of your image gallery folder (Important: do not copy and paste this text, it contains formatting. Type it!)

{gallery}myfolder{/gallery}

Click Save and load the page in the front end to view the image gallery.
