Installing Joomla 3

Create the Joomla home directory

Download the Joomla zip package from the following website: (skip this step if you are doing the class room version of the course)

Open your host servers cPanel (or equivalent). If you do net yet have a host click here to find out how to get one

In the Files section open the File Manager.


In the left pane open the public_html folder (click on the folder text). This will open the folders contents). 

In the file manager tool bar click on New Folder

Name the folder. (This will be the default path of the website location eg yourdomain/folderName).

Open the new folder by clicking on it in the left pane. It should say 'This directory is empty' in the right pane.

In the the tool bar click on Upload. Navigate to the Click on it and the upload will begin in a new tab.

When it has finished uploading (check the message in the bottom right) close this tab and click on reload in the tool bar above the right pane.

Click on the zip file in the right pane then click Extract in the toolbar.


Once the extraction process has finished close the pop up window and the Joomla installation files should be in your directory.

Create User and Database

In the cPanel, under Databases open MySQL Databases. 

In the Create New Database section type a name for your database. This can be any  If you are on a shared server the database name will be appended to your host username with an underscore (hostusername_databasename)

Click Create Database. Click Go Back once the database has been created.

Scroll down to the MySQL Users section of the MySQL Databases window.

Type in a user name, usually just the same as the database name. 

Use the password generator to generate a password. Copy and paste this password into a new notepad document, and click Use Password.

Click Create User. The message should display that the user was created successfully. Make sure you have the database name, user name and user password recorded in your new notepad document. You need these credentials to set Joomla up. 

Click Go Back.

In the Add User To Database section select, from the drop down lists, your user and database. Click Add. 

Select the All Privileges  check box and click Make Changes. 


We can now complete the final step of the installation process.

Install Joomla

Open a web browser and type yourdomain/your directory.

You should see the Joomla configuration page. 


Warning GPC Magic Quotes configuration: If you do not see the configuration screen, and insteaad see a warning about Magic Quotes you will need to contact your host. Some hosts leave this PHP configuration on. Submit a support ticket with your host to correct this. Ask that they turn magic quotes off. 

On the Joomla configuration page enter your site name, a description if you want, your email address and user details. The password and user name you create here are for the the administration account of your new Joomla site. They are not the credentials for the database or cPanel.

Click Next. In the database screen select mysql (not mysqli). Enter your database name, username (not forgetting your host username prefix) and database password. 


Review the details in the overview page. Click Install. 

Finally click Remove Installation Directory. Your site is now set up.
